Café Tempo Wins Award

November 15, 2017

Award-winning artistry isn't only on the walls of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art: it's also on the plates of the museum’s restaurant, Café Tempo.

Café Tempo took silver in the Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards for its entry, "Art on Plate." The award recognizes exceptional menus, presentations and dining concepts.

In its category – medium division, single retail concept – JCCC Dining Services showed judges the inner workings of Café Tempo, right down to the temperature in its refrigerators. But the big selling points were photos of the food the restaurant serves, including daily specials, paninis, salads and gourmet pancakes like Peach Basil and Pumpkin Apple.

Destination for Good Food

For Marcel Des Marteau, Executive Sous Chef for Café Tempo, taking the silver in a national contest was just the acclaim he wanted for the restaurant.

“We’d like people to know that Café Tempo can be a destination for great food just like the Nerman is a destination for great art," he said.

At Café Tempo, employees (many of them students at JCCC) create meals in full view of customers then arrange the food artfully before calling the diner to pick it up. This combination of "gourmet casual" led to the concept of "Art on a Plate."

Café Tempo is open Monday to Friday. Breakfast, including gourmet pancakes on Thursdays, is served from 7 to 10 a.m.; lunch is 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and coffee, pastries and desserts are served until 3 p.m.

No reservations are needed. For more information, contact JCCC Dining Services at 913-469-8500, ext. 3219.

The Horton Dining Awards are sponsored by the National Association of Colleges and University Food Services (NACUFS) as a way to focus attention on the culinary skills of member schools.
