Top 10 Things Every New Student at JCCC Should Know

You’ve been accepted to Johnson County Community College, congratulations! You’ve made an excellent choice. As a new student, you probably have many questions about the admissions and enrollment process, student resources, paying for college, getting involved on campus and more—and we have answers. Here are the top ten things every new student at JCCC needs to know.

10. What are placement tests for classes and how do I know if I need to take one?

Some courses at JCCC require placement tests prior to enrollment. This helps measure your competency in subject areas like English, math and reading so you can start with courses that best fit your level of skill. If you have successfully completed college courses equivalent to our math and English courses or if you have a qualifying ACT, you may not need to take a placement test. 9. I’m required to complete New Student Orientation. What’s that?

New Student Orientations are designed to help you be a successful student at JCCC and are offered two ways: in person and online. The in-person option allows you to connect with a Success Coach, who will help you log into your JCCC account and give you an overview of enrollment, financial aid, student resources and more. This is a great time to ask questions and schedule a future appointment with your Success Coach. Not only can Success Coaches help you create a personalized action plan and connect you to valuable resources, they can also serve as a mentor for your first year. That’s something every college student could use! The online version of orientation covers this same content in a video format, and after completion, your Success Coach will reach out to you by email.

8. What if I don’t know what I want to study? What if I’m still deciding?

It’s no problem if you’re still deciding on your college major or career path. The Career Development Center is ready to help! Sign up for a free Choices workshop to guide you through the beginning stages of the career decision-making process. CliftonStrengths workshops help you discover your top five natural strengths and how they can contribute to your success in college and beyond. The Career Development Center can also assist with major and occupation exploration, résumé preparation, job searches, interview practice and more. 7. How should I select my courses? Can I do it by myself?

You could create your own course schedule, but it’s always best to get assistance from a JCCC counselor. Counselors provide academic, personal and career advising for students. They know what courses are required for specific programs and can help create a course schedule based on individual needs, responsibilities and goals. They also provide short-term personal counseling and assistance in crisis situations. Appointments may be scheduled by calling 913-469-3809. You can also connect with counselors by email or instant messaging.

6. I was on an Individual Education Plan (IEP) in high school. How do I get accommodations for my disability at JCCC?

If you have a documented disability, Access Services can provide support and help you accomplish your educational goals. To request accommodations, complete an application through the myAccess portal on the Access Services webpage. You’ll need to upload documentation directly to the portal or email your forms to myAccess@jccc.edu so an advisor can review them to determine eligibility. 5. I didn’t take high school very seriously but really want to succeed in college. Do you offer tutoring?

We do! Students can get free, weekly individualized help in any course through the Academic Achievement Center’s (AAC) tutoring program. The AAC helps with time management, organization, reading, study skills, test preparation and campus technology. Our Academic Resource Center (ARC) is also available for free in-person or online tutoring assistance in a variety of subjects like math, language, reading, science and writing. The ARC also provides College Success classes designed to help you better handle the demands of academics. Instead of teaching a specific subject, these classes provide opportunities to gain academic skills.

4. I’m worried that I might not be able to afford college. What should I do?

JCCC offers several ways to help pay for college, so don’t fret! We recommend new students visit the Financial Aid office (second floor, Student Center) to get information about the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), grants and student loans, the federal work-study program and scholarships. The Bursar’s Office also offers a helpful payment plan if you prefer to pay tuition in installments.

3. I’ll need to work while attending JCCC. Can someone help me find a job?

The Career Development Center can assist with your job search. Their staff can connect you to off-campus job opportunities, or you can use their online resources to explore for yourself. Be sure to register with JobLinks, a free job and internship database provided for JCCC students and alumni. Interested in working on campus? 2. I would like take classes on campus, but I don’t have a car. What are my options?

JCCC has partnered with RideKC to offer U-Pass, a service that allows you to use your student ID card and ride free on most RideKC bus routes. No sign-up is required; simply swipe your JCCC ID at the fare box. For maps, schedules and additional ticket information, visit RideKC , or download the Transit app.

In addition, Micro Transit is an on-demand public transit option at your service. Get picked up at your house and dropped off on campus at your convenience for only $1.50. Search for the Microtransit app on the Google Play or Apple App Stores to request your first ride!
